‘Alien: Resurrection’: The Ridiculous Newborn

We’ve been neglecting the other Alien films outside of the first two and Prometheus. There’s a perfectly good reason for that: they suck! But, we can’t ignore them completely, so here’s a bone thrown to 1997’s Alien: Resurrection. I won’t give a full synopsis to this dreck, but to put it in a nutshell: perennially evil Wayland-Yutani Corp. has cloned Ripley, and the alien being that was growing inside her at the time of her death in Alien3. Bioweapon scientists remove the alien from her at the beginning of the film, and I guess that since it is a queen, and from a human female host, the alien species is now birthed in the good old-fashioned human method of wriggling out of its mother whole. As opposed to a facehugger impregnating a host with a chestburster, which subsequently lives up to its name by bursting out of said host. You know, the normal alien lifecycle that has been established through every other Alien film. Or something like that, Resurrection gets hard to follow by the end. At any rate, the alien queen gives birth to a human/alien hybrid called the Newborn. It looks like this:

A face not even an alien mother could love

I guess the innovation here is supposed to be the alien’s eyes, which are human-ish and soulful. Too bad the whole thing just looks ridiculous. The only interesting thing in the movie is probably the newborn’s death at the end: it is sucked out into the vacuum of space through a tiny hole in the spaceship fuselage. They had planned that death for Veronica Cartwright’s character Lambert in the original Alien, but there someone figured out that such a premise is ridiculous. No such level-headed thinking is anywhere to be found in Alien: Resurrection.

  1. It was already established that all xenomorphs are host/alien hybrid, and to some extent the alien probably does not even have its own form (except perhaps the head). So it is hard to see how or why this particular hybrid is different; my guess is that Whedon just blithely ignored canon and pitched the hybrid idea as exciting and new.

  2. lol, you entirely missed the fact that number 8 and the queen are still geneticly spliced with eachother. number 8 gets acid blood and the queen, whom ALSO lays eggs, gets a womb. its not really that hard to follow but you have made up your mind that you hate something you are too blind to see it for what it is. I think Alien 4 is really not an Alien movie but more a sidestory about what happened to ripleys blood and is a terrible movie about genes, greed, freaks and ofcourse aliens. Also Prometheus is a masterpiece but since dumbasses did not understand it and started to cry about aliens, Ridley sadly gave after and made the supershitty follow up to prometheus that didnt give anything back from all the questions we had from Prometheus. I guess you Love Alien VS Predator.
